Helping Those Who Have Been Injured Recover For More Than 25 Years

Why truck driver fatigue remains a serious safety concern

Commercial trucks play a vital role in moving goods across the country every day. While most truck drivers work hard to operate their vehicles safely, the demands of the job can sometimes create significant safety challenges.

Long hours on the road, tight delivery schedules and extended periods of driving can increase the risk of fatigue. When a driver becomes overly tired, their ability to react and make safe decisions may be affected.

Understanding fatigue and federal driving limits

Driver fatigue is a serious safety concern in the trucking industry because it can impair judgment, slow reaction times and reduce overall awareness. The Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) found that 13% of commercial motor vehicle drivers involved in crashes were considered fatigued at the time of the collision.

In many ways, driving while extremely tired can create risks similar to those associated with impaired driving. A fatigued driver may have difficulty maintaining focus, recognizing hazards or responding quickly to changing traffic conditions.

To help reduce these risks, federal regulations establish hours-of-service (HOS) rules that limit how long commercial truck drivers may operate their vehicles. These rules generally require drivers to take rest breaks and limit the number of consecutive hours they can spend driving. The goal is to ensure drivers have adequate opportunities for sleep and recovery before returning to the road.

Unfortunately, fatigue-related crashes can still occur despite these regulations. Drivers may experience irregular schedules, overnight driving demands or pressure to meet delivery deadlines. Even when a driver technically complies with HOS requirements, fatigue can remain a concern if they are not getting sufficient restorative rest. In some cases, investigators review driver logs, electronic records and other evidence to determine whether fatigue may have contributed to a collision.

When fatigue contributes to a truck accident, the consequences can be severe, often resulting in catastrophic injuries and significant financial losses for those involved. If you or a loved one has been injured in a collision with a commercial truck, speaking with a legal professional can help you understand your options for pursuing compensation and holding the responsible parties accountable.
