Many daily activities are overlooked driving distractions

Drivers certainly know about some distractions they face, and they may take active steps to avoid them. Texting and driving is perhaps the most often-cited example of distracted driving. People still do it, but they generally understand that it is dangerous and distracting.

That said, many everyday activities also qualify as driving distractions. Some drivers do not realize how distracted they are, which can make them dangerous to everyone else on the road.

Eating and drinking

For example, eating a meal or drinking any beverage — not just alcohol — can be dangerous while driving. It can take a hand off the wheel, and it may also take a driver’s eyes off the road as they look down at food or drinks.

But eating and drinking in the car is incredibly common. Many people stop to pick up breakfast or a cup of coffee on the way to work every day.

Listening to music

Adjusting vehicle controls can also become a distraction. Many drivers cause accidents because they are looking down to change the radio station, adjust a playlist or turn up the stereo.

On top of that, some studies have found that the type of music a person listens to can also affect their driving. Generally speaking, fast and loud music may be more distracting. People also tend to become more distracted when listening to music they personally chose, rather than a calmer playlist selected for them.

Have you been injured in an accident?

You have to share the road with distracted drivers every day. If one of them causes an accident and you suffer injuries, it is important to understand how to seek financial compensation for medical bills, lost wages and other damages.
