They are called “accidents” because most people never intentionally try to get into collisions. Yet, just the same, they occur every day here in New Jersey and the rest of the United States.
It’s a fact that during certain times of the year, accidents are more likely to happen. Unfortunately, prom season is rife with dangers for teenagers on the road. Learn more below about how to protect your kids from some perilous moments this prom season.
Parents, stay informed
If your son or daughter will be attending prom and its related activities this spring, now is the time to gather information about their plans. Confirm the details regarding start and end times of the dance itself and any after-parties.
Network with other parents
Speak to the parents of the kids your teen will be attending prom with. Determine whether a parent or other appropriate adult will be chaperoning the after-parties your teen wants to attend. Stress the importance of making sure the kids remain drug and alcohol free at the events.
Arrange for transportation yourself
Contracting and paying for a limo to transport your teen and their prom date gives you a level of control you would otherwise not have. Then, you are the client and can insist that no unplanned stops be made or drugs and alcohol allowed in the car.
Another good idea is to go in together with several parents and arrange for a party bus to transport the group to the dance, restaurant and the after-party.
Advocate for your child if they are injured
Despite all the best intentions, stuff happens. If your child is injured in a prom-night collision, you will need to see that they receive the medical care they need to physically recover.
Parents also can arrange for legal representation to help their teens recover financial damages from the person(s) liable for their injuries and other losses.
