Did a road rage driver cause a collision?

Road rage creates numerous safety hazards. In some cases, drivers who become enraged in traffic follow others and assault them or threaten them with a deadly weapon. Other times, drivers who succumb to road rage can operate their vehicles in unsafe manners that directly lead to preventable collisions.

Aggressive, unsafe drivers are often responsible for the crashes they cause, including secondary collisions that may not directly involve their vehicles. How do road rage drivers increase the risk of a collision?

By behaving erratically

Road rage drivers often express their emotional agitation with their vehicles. If they believe another driver cut them off, they may proceed to maneuver around that vehicle and then cut them off in retaliation. They could create a scenario that causes a rear-end crash.

Other times, road rage drivers may swerve over the line between lanes to intimidate another driver. If the targeted motorist doesn’t have room to maneuver or doesn’t respond quickly, a sideswipe collision could occur. Erratic behavior in traffic increases the likelihood of a crash.

By becoming a distraction

Road rage drivers screaming out their windows, weaving through traffic and otherwise behaving aggressively can become a source of visual and cognitive distraction. Other drivers may focus on the display of anger occurring nearby instead of on traffic conditions.

Road rage drivers sometimes cause distraction collisions or wrecks, where drivers seeking to avoid them hit others. People who violate the law by driving in an aggressive, inappropriate manner may be responsible for the economic damages caused by their behavior.

People affected by road rage may have grounds for an insurance claim or even a personal injury lawsuit. Reporting the road rage and looking into options for holding a driver accountable can be a smart move for those affected by a road rage car crash.
