What causes a semitruck to jackknife?

On Behalf of | Feb 8, 2026 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

A semitruck jackknifing on a high-speed stretch of highway is one of the most dangerous events that can occur. It happens when the trailer swings out to the side and folds toward the cab like a pocketknife.

When this occurs, the driver can lose control and the trailer may slide across multiple lanes and create sudden hazards for nearby motorists.

Winter conditions play major role

A jackknife often begins with a loss of traction. Semitruck jackknife accidents can occur when the semi’s trailer skids and swings out during braking or turning. Wet roads, ice, snow and uneven surfaces can increase the risk.

If a driver brakes too hard or too suddenly, the trailer can continue moving forward while the cab slows down. This difference in movement can cause the trailer to swing out and create a dangerous V-angle.

Excessive speed also a factor

Exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for the road conditions contributes to jackknife crashes. An 18‑wheeler needs more time and distance than passenger vehicles do to slow down.

When a driver travels too fast for conditions, the trailer can become unstable. Sharp turns, sudden lane changes and downhill grades can add to the risk. On busy New Jersey highways where traffic patterns shift quickly, these factors can combine in ways that make a jackknife more likely.

Improperly loaded cargo

The big rig’s cargo weight and balance matter as well. If a load is uneven or unsecured, it can shift during travel. A shifting load can pull the trailer off line and make it harder for the driver to maintain control. Mechanical issues such as worn brakes or low tire pressure can also contribute to instability.

A jackknife can block multiple lanes and create a chain reaction of secondary crashes. Smaller vehicles may not have enough time to stop or steer away. Even at lower speeds, the size and weight of a semitruck can cause significant roadway disruption.

Protect your rights after a jackknife crash

Accident victims have a certain timeframe to file claims after a wreck occurs. Learning more about your rights and responsibilities after a collision can help you make the right decisions.
