Helping Those Who Have Been Injured Recover For More Than 25 Years

Pedestrians face an increasingly pressing parking lot safety hazard

On Behalf of | Sep 25, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Parking lots have always been somewhat dangerous for pedestrians. Although drivers know they need to watch for pedestrians in parking lots, they aren’t always as attentive as they should be. Many drivers resent giving pedestrians the right of way, and others may become too aggressive in parking lots with limited spaces.

Unfortunately, modern technology has potentially worsened parking lot safety instead of improving it. Pedestrians may need to be especially cautious in parking lots from now on to protect themselves from preventable collisions.

Digital distraction is now a concern

Distraction has always been an issue that affects pedestrian safety, but mobile devices have amplified the unsafe trend of multitasking while driving. Although most people recognize that they shouldn’t text on the open road, quite a few people are comfortable texting in parking lots. In fact, people may even view videos and scroll through social media in parking lots.

More people admit to these forms of distraction in parking lots than out on the road. A shocking 56% of people admit to texting while driving in parking lots, while 63% program GPS systems. Approximately 52% admit to using social media, while 49% take photos (including selfies) or watch videos while actively driving in parking lots.

The end result is more risk for pedestrians and even other drivers. Distracted drivers who aren’t watching for pedestrians can easily injure or even kill people if they hit a pedestrian head-on.

Those injured in pedestrian parking lot crashes may have the right to request compensation from an at-fault driver. Filing an insurance claim or a lawsuit can potentially help people pay for their medical care and cover their lost wages after a collision accordingly.
